Manly Knives Patriot Review (Bulgaria EU)

Last Update 14-05-2021

Manly Knives Patriot review After reviewing the Blaze here is the smaller “brother” the Patriot , this is a smaller Bushcrafting or Hunting knife, very well suited for General and Kitchen use too, the lightweight makes it a good backup knife, I found out about them talking with friends on a knife group on fb.

The blade on mine is D2 (it has an awesome price to performance ratio), D2 is a semi-stainless steel, which means it will stain if in contact with acid foods, acids, or when left dirty-wet. On the other side it does not rust so easily as carbon steels maintaining a good toughness, edge holding and ease of sharpening.

It is also available in USA made CPM-154 powder steel, a high performance powder technology stainless steel. (might review it in the future!).

Back to the knife, it arrives in a plastic sleeve inside simple cardboard box marked manly, inside you find the knife in the sheath (for protection) with no card blade protector and a folded card with specs (model name, steel, size, materials etc)

The Patriot is  very comfortable in the hand, it does not slip or move easily, i have small-medium hands is it should fit bigger hands comfortably, the knife’s tang is in this case more standard, it is flush with the G-10 handle.

The 4mm thickness of the tang is the same of the Blaze and is more than enough for most chores, in this case a more common Flat Grind has been chosen and this one too is very thin behind the edge, this gives the Patriot an awesome ability to slice and cut through most materials and food. The D2 should give enough toughness and resilience so no worries about it.

The spine is sharp and can be used with firesteels or ferrorods (will update the review as soon as I can test the bushcraft capabilities…damn coronavirus!)

The sheath is very well made  and it’s made of kydex, a very hard moldable thermoplastic, common in quality knife sheaths, it has a good SNAP! in both ways, the retention though feels less secure than on the Blaze, after a week I have yet to manage to disengage it accidentally.

The clip rides high on the belt (for my likings, I don’t need to conceal it) so on mine I have added a safety-belt made, belt-loop so it can ride lower, no need to rise your jacket to draw it.

The Patriot has bee chosen, in Toxic Green G-10 as my backup knife for my Survival Kit – Outdoor Kit, which will soon be reviewed.

Here are some Technical Specifications, taken from the website and reviewed, weights on mine are 132gr for the knife, not 126gr as from the website.

This is the standard sheath, that’s not been modified

I have added some paracord embellishment and a belt loop so it can ride lower, i’m not a fan of high riding sheaths, when you sit they hit your ribs! Manly, please consider it!

Check the satin finish, it’s not too rough not too fine, I really like it.

The Patriot worked fine, the factory edge rolled a little bit but no damage can been seen on the edge, keep in mind batoning is not the primary scope of this knife, the thin edge might suffer a little bit but was able to hold pretty well.

I’m sure that after it is resharpened the result will be fine, hope to update the review soon.

Last Words and Conclusions:

What I like:

  • MONSTER Price and quality! we’re talking about 49€ less the discount!
  • Good machining, Geometry and very comfortable handles, no sharp edges or parts
  • Steel seems well heat treated
  • arrives sharp and well sharpened
  • knife sheath locks well and does not rattle
  • clip is high but secure

What I DON’T like:

  • nothing in particular

Other considerations:

  • the edge “might” be thin for some uses, I will report back with use if this might be a problem or not with use
  • I would like to see a belt loop like the one I have installed, so it can ride lower on the belt, the clip makes it ride very high
